On being a Spedanista

A Spedanista is one who studies the life and works of

John Spedan Lewis (1885-1963)

Spedan is famous for creating the John Lewis Partnership which was the gift of his business in trust to his employees.

In 1948 he wrote Partnership For All. In the preface he explains that his purpose is to produce guidance when questions arise within or external to the partnership. He covers practically every aspect of partnership and it is clearly a guide to operations after his time. It is in effect the bible of the John Lewis Partnership.

In 1954 he wrote Fairer Shares in which he sets out the results of his partnership creation as a more general guide to others contemplating his partnership model.

He passed his publication rights in both books as a gift to the John Lewis Partnership.

Every member of the Partnership Council should have a copy of Partnership For All as an aid to making difficult decisions with the benefit of Spedan’s business experience and guidance.

The John Lewis Partnership published a third edition of Partnership For All in March 2014 under ISBN:0992887100 but the print run was minute and you may have difficulty in finding a copy other than in The British Library. They also have an electronic version which has as yet, January 2017, to be made public.

The best account of his life and partnership is to be found in Spedan’s Partnership by Peter Cox ISBN:9780955187728.
